NEMTAC® ACCREDITATION PROGRAMS

What is NEMTAC Accreditation?

NEMTAC Accreditation is a national, third-party accreditation program for non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT) providers. Accredited organizations have been independently evaluated against consensus-based standards developed by an ANSI-Accredited Standards Developer and approved by the NEMTAC Board of Directors.

NEMTAC Accreditation verifies that an organization meets nationally recognized benchmarks for safety, service quality, governance, and operational accountability in non-emergency medical transportation.

A Trusted Standard for Quality and Safety

NEMTAC® offers the only national accreditation program made just for non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT) providers. Getting accredited by NEMTAC shows that your company follows the highest standards in safety, service, and professionalism.

Accreditation is more than just a certificate—it proves your organization is committed to doing things the right way. It shows you care about your passengers, follow the rules, and always aim to provide safe, reliable transportation.

Our accreditation process is detailed and often goes beyond what most state or local rules require. Being accredited can help your company grow, lower your risks, and help you stand out in your community and the industry.

Some states have already recognized the value of NEMTAC Accreditation. For example, the state of Mississippi accepts NEMTAC Accreditation as an alternative to a state license. In Minnesota, brokers offer special incentives to providers who earn accreditation before January 31st each year. These policies help improve the quality and safety of NEMT services for the people in those states.

We are also actively working with other states to implement similar programs, where NEMTAC Accreditation could be recognized as a trusted alternative to traditional state licensure. These ongoing efforts are helping to strengthen standards and improve service quality nationwide.

To begin the process, your organization should review the NEMTAC Accreditation Handbook. This handbook helps you understand the requirements and lets you evaluate if your company is ready to apply. NEMTAC only approves up to five organizations per month, so each review gets careful attention. The number of spots available is reviewed regularly by our Board of Directors.

It’s important to know that our survey team does not give advice or help companies get ready. Their job is to fairly evaluate your organization based on the standards in the handbook. If you find yourself often asking, “Is this okay?” during the process, it may mean your organization needs to prepare more before applying.

Earning NEMTAC Accreditation means your organization already meets high national standards for safety, service, and professionalism. It’s not just about passing a test—it’s about showing that your team is already doing excellent work every day.

What Does NEMTAC Accreditation Represent?

NEMTAC Accreditation represents verified compliance with national standards specifically developed for non-emergency medical transportation. The accreditation process evaluates organizational policies, operations, and governance and often exceeds state and local regulatory minimums.

NEMTAC is the only national organization offering an accreditation program designed exclusively for NEMT providers and has been designated an ANSI-Accredited Standards Developer (ASD) since 2018.

Several states and payers have recognized the value of NEMTAC Accreditation. For example:

  • Mississippi accepts NEMTAC Accreditation as an alternative to state licensure.
  • In Minnesota, brokers offer incentive programs for providers who achieve accreditation by established deadlines.

NEMTAC continues to work with states, regulators, brokers, and industry stakeholders to strengthen the role of standards-based accreditation nationwide.

How the NEMTAC Accreditation Process Works

NEMTAC Accreditation is the national benchmark for operational excellence in non-emergency medical transportation. Whether you are a new provider or an established company, we are here to support your path to national recognition.

Follow these three steps to begin your journey:

STEP 3

Once operationally prepared, organizations submit the full accreditation application. The review process includes:

  • Submission of required policies and supporting documentation
  • Compliance and standards review
  • Organizational evaluation, which may include interviews or site visits
  • Final review and accreditation decision by the NEMTAC Board of Directors

NEMTAC survey teams do not provide consulting, coaching, or preparatory guidance. Accreditation is awarded based on demonstrated compliance with published standards.

Accreditation Review Platform

NEMTAC utilizes a secure online review platform to manage accreditation documentation, readiness assessments, and review workflows. All accredited organizations are fully integrated into the platform for the duration of their accreditation term. Accreditation is valid for three (3) years from the date of award by the Board of Directors.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How long does it take to get NEMTAC Accreditation?

Once an application is submitted to NEMTAC, an organization should allow 90 days to complete the accreditation process. The timeline is contingent on the efficient flow of information between NEMTAC and the organization seeking accreditation. A detailed accreditation step-by-step guide is provided to facilitate this process.

How long is my NEMTAC Accreditation valid for?

NEMTAC accreditation is valid for a three-year (3) period, provided that all required credentials remain current in ProCredEx and all fees are kept up to date.

Failure to maintain monthly payment arrangements or keep credentials updated in ProCredEx will result in the early termination of accreditation.

What does the NEMTAC Accreditation Process Encompass?

NEMTAC accreditation involves a comprehensive review of key operational areas to ensure compliance with industry best practices. The evaluation includes an assessment of the following categories and supporting documentation:

Organizational Management
Human Resources
Driver Credentialing
Compliance Program & Ethical Business Practices
Vehicle Maintenance
Fleet Operations
Communications

This thorough review process ensures that accredited organizations uphold the highest standards of safety, efficiency, and professionalism in non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT) services.

I Just Started My NEMT Company—Should I Get NEMTAC Accredited?

NEMTAC Accreditation is designed for established non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT) organizations that have been in operation for at least 12 months and have a fully developed set of policies, procedures, handbooks, or guidelines that are actively practiced across all areas of the organization.

As a new NEMT company, we encourage you to focus on building a strong operational foundation, ensuring compliance with industry standards, and developing consistent processes before pursuing accreditation. Achieving NEMTAC Accreditation is a significant milestone that demonstrates excellence, safety, and quality—but it’s most beneficial for companies that have a proven track record and structured operations.

In the meantime, consider engaging with NEMTAC’s education, training, and resources to help establish best practices and prepare your organization for future accreditation. If you have questions about readiness or need guidance, we’re happy to help!

How does an organization start the accreditation process?

It is easy to do!

1. Download a copy of the NEMTAC Accreditation Standard located above.

2. Review accreditation readiness by comparing and preparing your organization to NEMTAC standards.

3. Submit the "Seeking Accreditation Application" and pay the Application Fee ($600). Your organization will be given access to ProCredEx and asked to upload the documents requested in the Accreditation Standard.

4. After your documents are uploaded, you will self evaluate for completion, and submit the collection for review by the review team.

What will NEMTAC Accreditation cost an organization?

Costs for accreditation vary depending on the size of the organization and the number of operations (locations, business entities or states).

The application fee for all organizations is $600. The accreditation fees are as follows:

$3600 - Pay $600 non-refundable application fee plus $83.33 monthly over the 3 years of accreditation.

$3000 - Pay $600 non-refundable application fee plus $2400 at time of Accreditation.

Why should my organization become NEMTAC Accredited?

NEMTAC Accreditation represents industry best practices while remaining scalable to organizations of all sizes and service models. Achieving accreditation demonstrates your organization’s commitment to quality and compliance to passengers, customers, regulators, payors, and the broader NEMT community.

In some states, accreditation offers additional benefits—Minnesota, for example, provides financial incentives for accredited providers, while in Mississippi, accreditation serves as a substitute for state licensure.
