INFORMATION

Who We Are

The Non-Emergency Medical Transportation Accreditation Commission® (NEMTAC®) is an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality, safety, and reliability of non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT) through the development of consensus-based standards, education, and accreditation programs.

NEMTAC exists because people across the industry choose to contribute their time, expertise, and judgment to something bigger than any one role or individual. Our standards are shaped through collaboration, debate, and shared commitment to improving non-emergency medical transportation nationwide.

Our work reflects the collective efforts of providers, brokers, health plans, regulators, technology vendors, and subject-matter experts who share a commitment to strengthening the NEMT system

Our Mission

NEMTAC’s mission is to advance safe, equitable, and high-quality non-emergency medical transportation by developing neutral, industry-driven standards and programs that support accountability, transparency, and continuous improvement.

Our Role in the NEMT Ecosystem

NEMTAC serves as a neutral convener and standards developer, not an advocacy group or trade association.

We do not represent a single stakeholder group or business model. Instead, we provide a structured, transparent process through which diverse stakeholders collaborate to define best practices and performance expectations for the NEMT industry.

Our work supports:

  • Improved service quality for passengers

  • Clear expectations for providers and brokers

  • Consistent frameworks for regulators and payers

  • Greater trust and accountability across the system

Standards Development

NEMTAC is an ANSI-accredited Standards Developing Organization (SDO). Our standards are developed through an open, consensus-based process that emphasizes balance, due process, and public input.

Standards development includes:

  • Multi-stakeholder advisory committees

  • Transparent drafting and review cycles

  • Public comment periods

  • Ongoing maintenance and revision

This process ensures that NEMTAC standards are practical, credible, and reflective of real-world operations.

Accreditation and Education

In addition to standards development, NEMTAC administers accreditation and education programs aligned with approved standards.

These programs are designed to:

  • Promote consistency and professionalism

  • Support continuous improvement

  • Provide objective validation of conformance

  • Enhance workforce competency and safety

Participation is voluntary and grounded in clearly defined criteria and expectations.

Governance and Independence

NEMTAC is governed by a Board of Directors and supported by advisory committees composed of volunteers from across the NEMT ecosystem.

Our governance structure is intentionally designed to:

  • Prevent dominance by any single interest group

  • Preserve independence and neutrality

  • Ensure transparency and accountability

  • Support long-term institutional continuity

Leadership roles may change over time; the mission and process endure.

A Community-Driven Organization

NEMTAC’s credibility is rooted in participation.

The organization exists because industry professionals choose to engage—often in addition to their primary roles—to debate, refine, and stand behind standards that improve NEMT nationwide. This shared commitment is the foundation of our work and the reason it continues to evolve.

Looking Forward

As the NEMT landscape changes, NEMTAC remains focused on its core purpose: providing clear, practical frameworks that support quality, safety, and accountability while respecting the diversity of communities, operating models, and regional needs.

Our work is ongoing, collaborative, and intentionally designed to outlast any single program, role, or individual.
